Opening with Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, a selection of psalms in Hebrew that combines spare melodic simplicity with surprising timbral effects; followed by Britten’s Four Sea Interludes and Passacaglia from Peter Grimes, capable of evoking the cries of seagulls and the phosphorescence of the sea; concluding with the Three Dance Variations from the ballet Fancy Free by the American composer, capturing the exuberance of young sailors on leave in New York.
