The first competition for the stage direction, sets and costumes ofRigoletto

For the first time, Teatro Regio announces a competition for the creation of the stage direction, sets, costumes and lighting of one of the world’s most popular operas: Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi.

The Regio has certainly demonstrated great interest in creativity in recent years, regularly inviting those directors who, with their work, are leaving their mark on the international scene. With this initiative, the Regio intends to go further in order to discover that which is still unfamiliar, and, at the same time, give the opportunity for those who haven’t yet established themselves to demonstrate their talent.

The best idea, i.e. the project which best utilizes the 200,000 euros made available for the realisation of the staging – inclusive of costumes, accessories, props and lighting  – will be performed in the next Opera Season at the Regio, and will become part of the repertoire that the Regio also takes, with great success, on tour around the region.
Definitely an opportunity not to be missed for all those who feel they are ready to face a challenge involving in primis the Regio, and that, we hope, can contribute to developing new points of view and generate new cultural debate.

On Wednesday 24 February, one of the masterpieces of twentieth-century opera will be presented for the first time in English at the Teatro Regio: Peter Grimes, the opera in a prologue and three acts by Benjamin Britten, from the poem The Borough by George Crabbe on the  libretto by Montagu Slater. The staging, from the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie of Brussels, carries the name of the prestigious German “cult” director Willy Decker, while on the podium of the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Regio will be maestro Yutaka Sado in a double debut for the conductor born in Kyoto in 1961: in Peter Grimes and in the direction of an opera in Italy. Great interpreters, beginning with tenor Neil Shicoff in the starring role and Cornelia Wulkopf, who will appear at the Regio for the first time. Returning to the theatre are Mark S. Doss, the unforgettable Jochanaan in Salome of Carsen, Nancy Gustafson, Elena Zilio and Mark Milhofer. The Chorus Master will be Roberto Gabbiani.
