Aci, Galatea e Polifemo

Davide Livermore’s rendition of the great Baroque wonder

Teatro Carignano, Friday 12 June 2009 at 8 pm

Friday 12 June in the splendid hall of the renovated Teatro Carignano Aci, Galatea e Polifemo, the serenata a tre by George Frideric Handel, on the libretto by Nicola Giuvo, will be presented for the first time in Torino. The staging of this work by Handel, on the 250° anniversary of his death this year, is part of an important project, created by the Centro di Musica Antica Pietà de’ Turchini and realised thanks to the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo, which also includes the renovation of the Teatro di Corte of the Palazzo Reale di Napoli. And it is this same Compagnia that has accomplished a cultural bridge between Torino and Naples, making this new production possible thanks to its important support. The staging of Aci, Galatea e Polifemo, realized by the Teatro Regio in co-production with the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli, is by the talented and established director Davide Livermore. Costumes are by Giusi Giustino. The musical performance has been entrusted to the Cappella della Pietà de’ Turchini, an orchestra specializing in Neapolitan Baroque repertoire, directed by Antonio Florio.

Opera and Ballet Season 2009-2010

L'Opera vincerà

Eleven titles, six new stagings – five of which are co-productions with important Italian and foreign opera theatres –, great ballet with The Nutcracker, closer ties with  the Teatro Stabile and an important tour in Japan and China: this is the new Regio season, the clearest demonstration of the capacity and desire of the Theatre to invest, a concrete response to a crisis that has brought about, in Italy, an unprecedented drop in public and private contributions, forcing many theatres to drastically reduce their performances.

Convinced of the unavoidable importance of music in the cultural patrimony of Italy, we believe that the cornerstone of our commitment is the public, whom we ask to continue actively supporting us in order to maintain our high level of quality which is internationally recognised, as is demonstrated by the presence of our productions in the most prestigious theatres of the Far East.

The other important element in the life of the theatre is the continuous presence of the Members of the Foundation, and in particular, the generous commitment of the Compagnia di San Paolo, Fondazione CRT and Gruppo Fondiaria SAI, which will  sponsor the inaugural evening for the sixth consecutive year.
