Teatro Regio, from Saturday 27 October 2012 to Tuesday 21 May 2013

Starting up again in October is the symphonic Concert Season, featuring the Orchestra and Chorus of the Regio and the Filarmonica ’900 in a varied program. An opportunity for admiring the symphonic conducting of some of the most important conductors of the opera season, including Yutaka Sado, from Japan, and Gianandrea Noseda, the Regio’s Music Director, who has always given great attention to the symphonic repertoire, in Italy and abroad. He will be opening the Concert Season on Saturday, October 27, with a symphonic-choral program dedicated to one of Hector Berlioz’s most extraordinary works, Roméo et Juliette, providing a rare opportunity to hear it in its complete version. He will also close the season, on Tuesday, May 21, with a concert dedicated to Russian repertoire, his favorite. Noseda will be on the podium for two other concerts: the New Year’s Eve Concert, with a scintillating program that concludes festively with the Galop infernal from Orphèe aux enfers by Jacques Offenbach, and an evening dedicated to music from the twentieth century to the present, with homage paid to Luciano Berio on the tenth anniversary of his death, and the world premiere of Trasfigurazione by the composer and pianist from Torino, Gianluca Cascioli.

In addition to Noseda and Yutaka Sado – who will appear on 19 November with pianist Dmitri Mayboroda – other great interpreters will be engaged on the podium of the Teatro Regio: the Oscar-winning composer Luis Bacalov, engaged in a concert of music for the cinema written by him and other great composers, including Ennio Morricone (17 December). Conductor Israel Yinon with cellist Jan Vogler will present a concert on 28 January, for the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, with Schelomo by Ernest Bloch, one of the most famous pieces of music based on Jewish melodies, with the voice of King Solomon and the wisdom of his thoughts represented by the long solos of the violoncello.

Of particular interest is the encounter proposed regularly by the Filarmonica ’900 with cinema, and which this year, on 25 February, features Charlie Chaplin in what many consider to be his masterpiece: The Kid. In the film, Charlot finds an abandoned newborn baby and brings him up; the two become inseparable and the “kid” helps his adoptive father to make money with a thousand tricks. Fifty years after the triumphal debut of the film, which took place in New York in 1921, Chaplin himself composed a new sound track. Now the Filarmonica ’900 has entrusted this music to the American composer and conductor Timothy Brock, one of the world’s greatest experts in the field of music for the cinema, who will lead the listener on a marvelous journey of sound and images.
