The romantic contemporary ballet by Angelin Preljocaj
Teatro Regio, Thursday 19 May at 8 pm
Presented for the first time, with great success, at the Biennale de la Danse de Lyon in 2008 and performed in Paris at the Théâtre de Chaillot for two consecutive seasons, Snow White arrives in Torino; the great romantic and contemporary ballet by Angelin Preljocaj, with music by Gustav Mahler, will be on stage at the Teatro Regio from 19 to 26 May for a total of seven performances.
A prominent choreographer of the French nouvelle danse, Angelin Preljocaj has been an original creator, with his sensitivity and strong character, for over twenty years. For his sensual and elegant choreography, the originality of his stagings and his depth of thought, the fifty-four year old French-Albanian choreographer continues to astonish audiences and win critical acclaim. For Snow White he has gathered all twenty-six dancers of the company, and asked the enfant terrible of French fashion Jean Paul Gaultier to dress his characters, and the artist, sculptor and designer Thierry Leproust to create the sets. The splendid music of Gustav Mahler’s ten symphonies constitutes the sound track of the story. «Stirring up emotions is a delicate matter. You have to manipulate Mahler’s music with great care, but today it’s a risk I want to run», the choreographer told Agnès Freschel on the occasion of the debut in Lyon, and the objective was fully reached: the ballet extrapolates a series of musical fragments that contribute to effectively portraying the different characters.«I wanted to tell a story, to digress into fairy-tale and enchantment. With Snow White I confront a theme that everyone knows: this allows me to concentrate on the language of bodies, energy and space, and on what the characters feel, in order to show only the transcendence of the bodies. Marvellous arguments for a choreographer». Preljocaj abides by the version narrated by the brothers Grimm, enriching it with a personal analysis of the symbolism contained in the structure of the tale. The stepmother thus becomes the central figure, dressed in black leather; majestic and dominating, it is she who concludes the ballet with a furious solo and wins the challenge against a tender, virginal evanescent Snow White. Everything is perfectly balanced: amorous and mortal pas de deux, seduction and eroticism, romanticism and candour. Alternating in the main roles are: 19 and 20 May Caroline Jaubert (Snow White), Julien Thibault (The Prince), Charlotte Siepiora (The Queen); 21 and 22 May Nagisa Shirai (Snow White), Fabrizio Clemente (The Prince), Patrizia Telleschi (The Queen); from 24 to 26 May Virginie Caussin (Snow White), Sergio Diaz (The Prince), Gaëlle Chappaz (The Queen).
Snow White will be presented to the public by Sergio Trombetta in Incontro con il Balletto to take place at the Piccolo Regio Puccini on Wednesday 11 May at 5.30 pm.
