Puccini’s masterpiece in the version Made in Regio
which has already been around the world
Teatro Regio, Saturday, 19th January 2013 at 20:00
From 19th – 29th January – La bohème by Giacomo Puccini is back at the Teatro Regio for four performances, not included in the ticket seasons, designed for the audience that wants to get closer to the core of opera history. It will be shown alongside Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano. La bohème is one of the most popular operas in the world and it was seen for the first time ever in Turin on 1st February 1896 and since then it has been inextricably linked to the Regio becoming its most prestigious jewel.
The sets and costumes which have been used before at the Teatro Regio are by Eugenio Guglielminetti. This edition of the opera will be by Saverio Santoliquido, Claudia Boasso and Laura Viglione and directed by Vittorio Borrelli – who is the first stage director of the Teatro Regio and is a collaborator of world famous directors – including the production that the Regio presented with great success at the ‘Shanghai Expo 2010’. Renato Palumbo, a popular interpreter of the Italian repertoire, will be on the podium.
The setting is agile, effective and it keeps to the opera tradition. It has been designed bearing in mind the requirements of different stages: the scenes are mounted on a turntable which contains the four environments - each corresponding to four paintings. The scenes were based on the sketches by Guglielminetti giving them a dramatic pictorial taste and flavour. The Maestro Claudio Fenoglio will conduct the Chorus of the Teatro Regio, the Children's Choir of the Teatro Regio and the Conservatorio "G. Verdi". The lights are by Andrea Anfossi.
In the rich structure of vocal interpreters there are some already established names both nationally and internationally such as Erika Grimaldi who played the role of Mimì. She is already known and loved by the public of Turin after her performance last November in the role of Micaëla in Carmen, as well as Mimì in Shanghai. The promising tenor, Giorgio Berrugi (as Rodolfo), will have his debut in Turin. He was already the first clarinet of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, and in 2008 he started his career as a tenor. His debut was in La bohème at the Teatro Comunale of Treviso, with repeats in Venice, Jesi and Fermo. The soprano Ekaterina Bakanova is Musetta, the baritone Simone Alberghini is Marcello, Federico Longhi is Schaunard, Gabriele Sagona is Colline and Matteo Peirone plays Benoît and Alcindoro.
La bohème will be presented to the public by Carla Moreni at the Encounter with the Opera to be held at the Piccolo Regio Puccini on Wednesday, 16th January at 17:30.
RAI-Radio3 will broadcast it live on its opening night, Saturday, 19th January at 20:00.
La bohème is organized with the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo, Founding Member of the Teatro Regio.
