Music has always played a central role in the art of Werner Herzog, even more so in his most recent films: «I want to use the imagination and sound in a way that you’ve never come across before», he writes as he begins to work on The Wild Blue Yonder, in which some of the spectacular footage of NASA is spliced with shots of the abysses below the Antarctic icecap, in an always magical and thrilling technique of suspension-interruption. The same can be said of the previous The White Diamond, filmed on board an aerostat over the gigantic Kaieteur Falls in Guyana.
With the images of the two films Herzog has created a new montage in which he has inserted the music of an astonishing ensemble, where there is a blend of the violoncello of the Dutch musician Ernst Reijseger (composer of all the material), the voice of the Senagalese Mola Sylla and the polyphonies of the quintet of traditional Sardinian voices Cuncordu e Tenore de Orosei. A virtuoso and hypnotic plot for an audacious cohesion between the northern and southern part of the world, between avant-garde jazz and a patrimony having roots further away.
