A classic of the symphonic-choral literature, one of the masterpieces of nineteenth-century sacred music opens this edition of the Concerts. Giuseppe Verdi composed the Requiem Mass at the height of his career to honour the memory of Alessandro Manzoni a year after his death, and he conducted the première himself in the church of San Marco in Milano, on 22 May 1874. Tenderness and terror, vastness and expressive power compete to create a score of such beauty that the work can be considered “our Beethoven’s ninth”.
